What is a naja?
Naja (or najahe -pronounced nah-zhah-hay) is the anglicized form of the Navajo word for “crescent”. It is an ornamental design often used in Navajo jewelry and is often worn as a pendant as the centerpiece in a squash blossom necklace.
While its’ exact origins are still a matter of debate today, the design apparently was adopted from the spaniards who settled in the New Mexico region. The spaniards would use the crescent design to adorn their horses, a practice that was likely adopted from the Moors during their occupation of Spain in the 8th century.
